Who would ever thought Shafie Mustafa could come out with something interesting and it has to be “Tukar Hati”, Suria’s latest telemovie that was televised on primetime earlier today, 22 Mar 08.
The main casts were Suhaimi Yusof, as the main character Harris Misbon, Watie Elite as Harris Misbon’s ex-wife and Sani Hussin as Fadly, the intern turn high roller in place of Harris after Harris had a heart attack which disabled him to work for a couple of months.
The plot, although I hate to say this, was really good. There was an adaptation of Jerry Maguire where Fadly whom initially started in the property firm, ARM, as an intern and idolised Harris like the Godfather of Property Business switched to be Harris’ nemesis and eventually became a major reason to why Harris was fired by his own co-founder of the company for underperforming after his comeback from medical leave.
My personal favourite as a whole was how the makers of this production, Shortman Films Pte Ltd, managed to bring Harris Misbon’s character to life. Especially when he turns from a scrooge to a non-avoidable honest man. After he had the heart transplant, he began to hallucinate exaggeratedly even to a state of having premonitions about the defects of the property he was about to sell and he will not be at ease until he shared the truth about the defects to his prospects. As far as I can remember, these kind of scenes are rarely brought forward and even if they did, none grabbed the attention of my memory bank as how Tukar Hati managed to give a tasteful finish to its story flow.
Another scene that I enjoyed is the part where Harris finally found the answer to the person who donated the heart to him and the movie went into flashback. I have to emphasise, that the prison and execution scene was brilliant and creative at major aspects although the director could choose to improve on the action scenes to boost the dramatic effect of Malik’s character. Malik was a hooligan involved in gangs and was charged for murder in a fighting incident and sentenced to the hanging tourniquet. Apparently, Malik had donated, upon his death, his kidney, his heart (to Harris) and perhaps his pair of eyes to a blind busker played by Rima Melati Adams.
In the flashback where Malik was the focus during his prison stay, the montage before, during and after his sentence to death almost teared me. His last meal when he ate his chosen menu, mee rebus, the prayers with the ustaz and his face that signed “remorse” all over was indeed touching. To add to it, he left behind his aged grandmother where in the show later on in real time was residing in an old folks’ home where initially Harris wanted to convince the committee to sell off so that he would get his handsome commission regardless whether the home was actually a non-profit organisation and was run by volunteers which if the sale was closed, the folks would be homeless.
The title Tukar Hati was in fact intelligent. Tukar Hati means Change Heart and please do not base on my online Malay lessons, thank you. It depicts Change of Heart literally and physically. Heart explained as kindness in general ie. Change into kindness. His relationship with his company changed and he chose to open his own property agency after being fired. Intern change to villain. They all seem to fit in the category of the meaning of Tukar Hati.
As opposed to my initial review on Projek Cerpen entitled Dual where I counter create another story as my rebuttal for the weak storyline, I would this time just keep my criticisms to a positive as Tukar Hati really deserve it. Kudos to the team on and behind the screen. I would change and create nothing as doing that might just be an insult to Tukar Hati.
If you happen to miss the show, I recommend you to write to Suria for a re-run. It’ll be my pleasure watching it again and this time round, I’ll get my PMP ready. Time to record and keep in my archive of good stories told on screen.
